Gravel blocks are found in clusters scattered around the map, both on the surface and underground. Gravel beaches are rare but they exist. Gravel can also appear in the Nether

Gravel is typically mined with a shovel, but also easily broken by hand. It has a 10% chance to drop flint (instead of the usual gravel block).

Gravel is one of only 2 blocks (the other being sand) that obey gravity in Minecraft. When there is no solid block beneath a gravel block, it will fall down. This way a player can be trapped underneath sand and suffocate.

Since gravel is not part of any recipy and is rarely used in construction, it is an ideal resource to fill pools of lava or water.
